Technical Summary
The 101NPMX8-119 is a 10-inch high-efficiency neodymium mid-woofer designed for lightweight, portable professional loudspeaker systems where minimum weight and maximum sensitivity are critical design parameters. It features a 2-inch CCAR (copper clad aluminum round wire) voice coil on a glass fiber former, a carbon fiber loaded paper cone with a triple roll fabric surround, and an inside neodymium slug motor with 2 aluminum shorting rings for minimized flux modulation and very low harmonic distortion. At 95 dB sensitivity (1W/1m) with an exceptionally light moving mass of 32.6 grams — roughly half that of a typical professional 10-inch woofer — the driver achieves its high output through efficiency rather than excursion, making it ideal for portable systems where amplifier power and cabinet weight must be minimized.
In bass reflex enclosures, recommended net internal volumes range from 23 to 32 liters with tuning frequencies between 50 and 61 Hz. Smaller volumes (23–27 liters tuned to 56–61 Hz) maximize mid-bass output and minimize cabinet size and weight for portable 2-way tops and stage monitors, while 32 liters tuned to 50 Hz extends the usable low-frequency response to approximately 42 Hz (–3 dB) for stand-alone applications without dedicated subwoofers. Port velocities are negligible across all alignments (8–10 m/s with a 76 mm round port) and port lengths are short (~100 mm), making port design completely uncritical. In sealed enclosures, the driver's Qts of 0.55 produces practical alignments at 22 to 50 liters with system resonances between 75 and 96 Hz. A 22-liter sealed enclosure (Qtc 1.0, fc 96 Hz) provides a compact mid-bass module for multi-way systems with subwoofer support, while larger sealed volumes extend the response for moderate stand-alone use.
The driver is rated for approximately 150 W AES / 300 W continuous power handling and is intended for use with DSP-controlled amplification. A high-pass filter in the range of 40–51 Hz (24 dB/octave Linkwitz-Riley) is recommended for vented alignments depending on enclosure tuning, with a typical crossover to a high-frequency driver at 1.5–3 kHz. The modest linear excursion (3.25 mm) reflects the efficiency-first design approach — the driver's 95 dB sensitivity delivers high SPL from moderate amplifier power, with the triple roll surround providing controlled mechanical excursion to 13.6 mm peak-to-peak for transient headroom.
This driver is particularly effective in lightweight portable 2-way and multi-way PA tops, stage monitors, column speakers, and installation systems where system weight, high sensitivity, and low distortion are priorities. The inside neodymium slug motor, carbon fiber loaded paper cone, aluminum basket, and triple roll surround provide a lightweight, durable package suited to demanding portable and touring applications where equipment must be carried, rigged, and transported frequently.

Key T/S: Fs=53Hz, Qts=0.55, Vas=49.7L, Sens=95dB 1W/1m
Power: AES 150W / Cont 300W / Peak 600W
Xmax=3.25mm (one-way linear), Xmech=11.25mm (protection at 13.6mm p-p)
Sd=363cm², Bl=9.6T·m, Re=5Ω, Mms=32.6g (exceptionally light for 10")
Voice Coil: 2" CCAR (copper clad aluminum round wire) on glass fiber former
(14.5mm winding height)
Magnet: Neodymium (inside slug) with 2 aluminum shorting rings
Cone: Carbon fiber loaded paper pulp | Surround: Fabric (triple roll)
Spider: Nomex | Basket: Aluminum
NOTE: This driver is engineered specifically for lightweight, portable
professional loudspeaker products. The combination of an inside
neodymium slug motor, carbon fiber loaded paper cone, and exceptionally
low moving mass (32.6g for a 10" — roughly half the mass of a typical
professional 10" woofer) produces a very high sensitivity (95 dB)
mid-woofer that gets loud with minimal amplifier power. The 2 aluminum
shorting rings in the neodymium motor minimize flux modulation for very
low harmonic distortion. The triple roll fabric surround provides
controlled long-excursion behavior (13.6 mm peak-to-peak mechanical)
while maintaining the lightweight design ethos. Vented enclosures in
the 23–32 liter range are the optimal configuration.
PRIMARY — Bass Reflex (Vented)
Use case: Portable 2-way and multi-way PA tops, stage monitors,
lightweight installation systems, and column speakers where the
101NPM handles the low-frequency and lower-midrange content,
typically crossed over to a compression driver or tweeter at
1.5–3 kHz. The lightweight motor and cone assembly make this
driver ideal for systems where total cabinet weight is a critical
design parameter.
PORT RECOMMENDATION: Round port (76mm diameter) — standard for 10"
bass reflex enclosures. Port velocities are very low across all
alignments (8–10 m/s) and port lengths are short (~100 mm), making
port design completely uncritical. A simple straight 76mm tube is
more than adequate. No flaring required.
a) VENTED — High SPL
Net Volume: 23 liters
Tuning (Fb): 61 Hz
Est. -3dB: 56 Hz
HP Filter: 51 Hz (24dB/oct LR recommended)
Round Port: 76mm dia × 102mm long
Slot Port: 184mm W × 45mm H × 143mm L
Port Velocity: 10.0 m/s
Notes: Most compact vented alignment, optimized for maximum
output per unit volume and minimum cabinet weight. Higher
tuning provides punchy, controlled mid-bass with excellent
transient response. Ideal for lightweight portable 2-way
tops and stage monitors paired with subwoofers, where the
95 dB sensitivity maximizes system headroom. A 23-liter
cabinet with this driver and a neodymium compression driver
produces an exceptionally lightweight, high-output system.
b) VENTED — Balanced Response
Net Volume: 27 liters
Tuning (Fb): 56 Hz
Est. -3dB: 52 Hz
HP Filter: 46 Hz (24dB/oct LR recommended)
Round Port: 76mm dia × 104mm long
Slot Port: 184mm W × 45mm H × 146mm L
Port Velocity: 9.2 m/s
Notes: General-purpose alignment with even response through
the bass region. Good balance between low-frequency extension,
cabinet size, and weight. Well-suited for most portable PA
tops, multi-way systems, and lightweight installation
loudspeakers. Provides moderate stand-alone bass capability
when subwoofer support is intermittent.
c) VENTED — Extended Low Frequency
Net Volume: 32 liters
Tuning (Fb): 50 Hz
Est. -3dB: 42 Hz
HP Filter: 40 Hz (24dB/oct LR recommended)
Round Port: 76mm dia × 113mm long
Slot Port: 184mm W × 45mm H × 158mm L
Port Velocity: 8.2 m/s
Notes: Maximum low-frequency extension for stand-alone use
without subwoofers. Reaches into the low 40s Hz, providing
substantial bass from a lightweight 10" system. The larger
cabinet is still very manageable for portable applications
given the lightweight neodymium motor. Best for applications
where full-range bass coverage is needed from a single
cabinet (e.g., portable entertainment, corporate events,
smaller live venues).
WEIGHT ADVANTAGE: A typical professional 10" mid-woofer with ferrite
motor weighs 3–5 kg. This driver's inside neodymium slug motor,
carbon fiber loaded cone, and aluminum basket keep the total driver
weight to a minimum. Combined with lightweight enclosure materials
(plywood or composite), the complete system weight is significantly
below comparable ferrite-based designs.
ALTERNATIVE — Sealed Enclosures (Compact Portable)
Sealed enclosures are viable where the driver is used as a mid-bass
in a multi-way system with a dedicated subwoofer handling the deep
bass. The higher Qts (0.55) means sealed Butterworth requires a very
large box (76L), so practical sealed volumes produce elevated Qtc
values. This is acceptable when the driver operates above 80–100 Hz
with active crossover filtering.
d) SEALED — Ultra-Compact (Qtc ≈ 1.0)
Net Volume: 22 liters
System Resonance (fc): 96 Hz
Qtc: 1.0
HP Crossover: 100–150 Hz (24dB/oct LR recommended)
Notes: Very compact sealed alignment for mid-bass use in
multi-way systems. The fc of 96 Hz means this configuration
is NOT suitable for stand-alone bass reproduction — it
requires a dedicated subwoofer. However, for a crossed-over
mid-bass driver in a 3-way or 4-way system, the compact
cabinet and high sensitivity make this an efficient choice.
The broad resonance peak at fc can be equalized flat with
minimal DSP effort.
e) SEALED — Compact (Qtc ≈ 0.85)
Net Volume: 36 liters
System Resonance (fc): 82 Hz
Qtc: 0.85
HP Crossover: 80–120 Hz (24dB/oct LR recommended)
Notes: Larger sealed enclosure with more useful bass
extension. The fc of 82 Hz provides some stand-alone bass
capability in smaller rooms, with room gain extending usable
response into the 60s Hz. A practical option for portable
systems where sealed construction simplicity and controlled
rolloff are preferred over vented bass extension.
f) SEALED — Moderate (Qtc ≈ 0.78)
Net Volume: 50 liters
System Resonance (fc): 75 Hz
Qtc: 0.78
HP Crossover: 70–100 Hz (24dB/oct LR recommended)
Notes: Largest practical sealed alignment. Provides near-flat
response with good bass extension. The 50-liter cabinet is
substantial for a portable product, so this alignment is
better suited to semi-permanent installation or larger
portable systems where deep sealed bass is a priority over
cabinet compactness.
SEALED NOTE: For this driver's Qts of 0.55, vented enclosures
provide significantly better bass extension in smaller cabinet
volumes. Sealed enclosures are recommended only when the simpler
construction, absence of port artifacts, or specific mid-bass
crossover integration are design priorities.
EXCURSION NOTE: The linear Xmax of 3.25 mm is modest for a 10",
reflecting the efficiency-first design philosophy. The driver
produces high SPL from its sensitivity (95 dB) rather than from
excursion-limited brute force. The triple roll surround provides
controlled mechanical excursion to 13.6 mm peak-to-peak for
transient peaks well beyond the linear range. In systems requiring
high output below 60 Hz, dedicated subwoofers should supplement
this driver.
