Design Notes

5FR delivers a good balance of low-mid frequencies. Extended frequency response opens opportunity do design compact audio systems with sizable amounts of low frequencies, yet wit great clarity in mid to high frequency region. The optimized behavior of this driver in the mid-frequency region allows the audio engineers design simplified passive crossovers or DSP without the needs for large equalizations.
The magnetic structure was designed around large high-grade ferrite magnet. All steel parts are extensively coated to cope with the most demanding environments.
The cone paper pulp and surround were fully developed by REDCATT engineers and address all major break-up modes. The speaker has improved off-axes frequency response.
The newly designed steel basket with front and rear gaskets allow this mid-woofer to be mounted from the front and rear.

NOTE ON DUAL-GASKET MOUNTING:
  Like the 41NFRX16-464A, the 5FRX8-465A basket incorporates front and rear gaskets,
  allowing the driver to be installed from either side of a baffle panel without adapter
  rings. This is a practical advantage for column and multi-way cabinet designs where
  front-loading vs. rear-loading configurations differ by variant, and for service access
  in installed sound applications.

NOTE ON CUSTOM CONE AND ENVIRONMENT-RESISTANT CONSTRUCTION:
  The paper cone and surround formulation were developed in-house by REDCATT to address
  specific break-up modes in the 5-inch format and to deliver improved off-axis frequency
  response. All steel basket components are extensively coated against humidity and
  environmental exposure, providing a higher level of protection than uncoated steel;
  however, the paper cone is not UV-stabilized (unlike the PP cone of the 4FRX4-385),
  so this driver is not fully outdoor-rated. It is suited to sheltered or semi-exposed
  installations and demanding indoor environments.

NOTE ON 5-INCH FORMAT — FIRST IN FAMILY:
  The 5FRX8-465A is the first 5-inch driver processed in the full-range family.
  Its Sd = 90 cm² is the largest effective cone area in the family (41NFRX16-464A:
  56.75 cm²; all others: ≤ 56 cm²). The larger cone area provides higher acoustic
  output per unit excursion and lower beaming frequency (f_beam = 2,047 Hz vs. 2,577–
  2,738 Hz for 4-inch drivers), making a tweeter crossover essential at ≤ 2 kHz for
  wide-dispersion applications.

THIELE-SMALL PARAMETERS (measured, broken-in)
  Fs   =  92.0 Hz          (free-air resonant frequency)
  Re = 5.6 Ω (DC voice coil resistance)
  Qes  =   0.73            (electrical Q)
  Qms = 11.4 (mechanical Q — exceptionally high; very low mechanical loss)
  Qts  =   0.69            (total Q — borderline sealed/free-air; see below)
  Vas  =   3.8 L           (equivalent air volume)
  Sd = 90.0 cm² (effective cone area — largest in full-range family)
  Mms  =   8.8 g           (moving mass)
  Rms = 0.45 kg/s (mechanical resistance — very low; consistent with high Qms)
  Cms  =   0.34 mm/N       (compliance)
  Bl   =   6.3 T·m         (force factor)
  Le = 0.28 mH (voice coil inductance)
  Xmax =   2.0 mm          (one-way linear excursion)
  Xmech=   7.0 mm          (one-way mechanical limit)
  Xprot=   9.6 mm          (one-way protection limit)

NOTE ON Qms = 11.4:
  The mechanical Q of 11.4 is the highest in the full-range family and indicates
  exceptionally low mechanical damping. This means the cone and suspension system
  stores rather than dissipates energy — a characteristic of very low-loss spider and
  surround materials. In free-air, a high Qms produces a narrow, sharp resonance peak
  if it exists (it does not at Qts = 0.69 < 0.707). In a sealed or vented enclosure,
  it contributes to a clean transient response with low in-band coloration. The overall
  damping in an enclosure is dominated by the electrical Q (Qes = 0.73) and the
  enclosure compliance, making the high Qms primarily a quality indicator rather than
  a practical design concern.

SENSITIVITY
  Datasheet Sensitivity: 89.55 dB (2.83V/1m, per CSV Sensitivity field)
  1W/1m reference (Lm): 88.16 dB (per CSV Lm field — used for Max SPL calculations)
  Consistency check:      For Re = 5.6 Ω, 2.83V delivers 8.009/5.6 = 1.430W.
                          Expected Sensitivity = 88.16 + 10×log10(1.430) = 88.16 + 1.55 = 89.71 dB.
                          CSV shows 89.55 dB — difference of 0.16 dB. Consistent ✓

DERIVED PARAMETERS
  Volume displacement:    Vd = Sd × Xmax = 90.0 cm² × 0.20 cm = 18.0 cm³
  Inductance rolloff:     f_Le = Re / (2π × Le) = 5.6 / (2π × 0.00028) = 3,183 Hz
  Cone radius:            r_cone = √(Sd/π) = √(90.0/π) = 5.35 cm
  Cone beaming onset:     f_beam = c / (π × r_cone) = 34400 / (π × 5.35) = 2,047 Hz
  Max SPL (AES, 60W):     1W/1m + 10×log10(60) = 88.16 + 17.78 = 105.9 dB at 1 m
  Zobel network:          Rz = 5.6 Ω; Cz = Le / Re² = 8.9 μF (series, across driver)
  Column array limit:     f_array = c / (2 × OD) = 34400 / (2 × 13.05) = 1,318 Hz ≈ 1.32 kHz

  KEY HIGHLIGHTS:
  • Max SPL = 105.9 dB — highest in the full-range family, 0.8 dB above 41NFRX16-464A
    (105.1 dB), achieved through 60W AES rating and 88.16 dB 1W/1m sensitivity.
  • Sd = 90 cm² and Vd = 18.0 cm³ are the largest in the full-range family.
  • f_beam = 2,047 Hz is the lowest in the family; a tweeter at ≤ 2 kHz is required
    for wide-dispersion coverage in any application.
  • f_Le = 3,183 Hz: HF rolloff begins within the audio band; a tweeter crossover
    at 1.5–2.0 kHz simultaneously addresses both constraints (f_beam and f_Le).
  • f_array = 1.32 kHz is the lowest in the family; column array crossover must be
    at or below 1.3 kHz to maintain coherent directivity.

FREE-AIR ANALYSIS (Qts = 0.69 — BORDERLINE; FREE-AIR IS PRIMARY RECOMMENDATION)
  Qts = 0.69 is just below the 0.707 threshold where sealed enclosures begin to offer
  a meaningful sealed-vs-free-air advantage. Because the Butterworth sealed alignment
  requires approximately 76 L (see below) — wholly impractical — and all practical
  sealed alignments (Qtc ≥ 1.00) give a higher f-3dB than free-air, free-air / open-
  back operation is the primary recommendation.

  Free-air f-3dB calculation (Qts = 0.69 < 0.707 → no resonance peak):
    1/Qts² = 2.100; 2 − 2.100 = −0.100
    u = [0.100 + √(0.100² + 4)] / 2 = [0.100 + √4.010] / 2 = [0.100 + 2.002] / 2 = 1.051
    Ω = √1.051 = 1.025
    Free-air f-3dB ≈ 1.025 × 92 = 94 Hz

  The free-air response is monotonically decreasing with f-3dB ≈ 94 Hz and no
  resonance peak — essentially a near-Butterworth free-air response. This is the
  best bass extension achievable from this driver without a vented enclosure.
ENCLOSURE RECOMMENDATIONS
PRIMARY: FREE-AIR / OPEN-BACK
  Qts = 0.69 is at the sealed/free-air boundary. The free-air f-3dB of 94 Hz with no
  resonance peak is better than any practical sealed alignment (Butterworth sealed
  requires 76 L; Qtc=1.00 sealed gives f-3dB = 105 Hz in only 3.45 L but is above
  the free-air f-3dB). Free-air or open-back installation is recommended as the
  primary option. A baffle or IEC open-back cabinet provides boundary reinforcement
  at the listening position.

SECONDARY: SEALED
  For closed-box 2-way systems where the driver is used as a mid-woofer above a
  subwoofer, sealed alignments with compact volumes are practical. Note that the
  Butterworth alignment requires an impractical 76 L for this driver.

  --- SEALED ALIGNMENTS ---

  Qtc = 0.707 (Butterworth): Vb ≈ 76 L — IMPRACTICAL (noted for completeness only)

  Qtc = 1.00 (balanced compact):   Vb = 3.45 L  |  fc = 133 Hz  |  f-3dB = 105 Hz
    Note: Most practical sealed alignment for compact 2-way use.

  Qtc = 1.20 (compact):             Vb = 1.88 L  |  fc = 160 Hz  |  f-3dB = 118 Hz

  Qtc = 1.50 (very compact):        Vb = 1.02 L  |  fc = 200 Hz  |  f-3dB = 140 Hz
    Note: Suitable for column systems with a subwoofer handling content below ~140 Hz;
    the 1 L per-driver bay volume is practical in multi-element column cabinet designs.

TERTIARY: VENTED (PORTED)
  A vented enclosure extends bass below free-air and sealed performance, suitable for
  PA, column, and hi-fi systems where maximum bass extension is a priority. For Qts = 0.69,
  vented performance is moderate — lower-Qts drivers (32NFRX8, 41NFRX16) achieve deeper
  extension per litre, but the large Sd (90 cm²) and Vd (18.0 cm³) make this driver
  capable of high acoustic output in the bass region.
  Port: 50 mm diameter (Ap = 19.64 cm²).
  End corrections: flanged end 21.3 mm + unflanged end 15.3 mm = 36.5 mm total.

  --- VENTED ALIGNMENTS (50 mm port) ---

  Alignment V1: Vb = 5 L  |  Fb = 75 Hz
    Effective port length: 209 mm → Physical port length: ~173 mm
    Port air velocity:      4.32 m/s peak  (well within 17 m/s hi-fi limit)

  Alignment V2: Vb = 7 L  |  Fb = 65 Hz
    Effective port length: 199 mm → Physical port length: ~163 mm
    Port air velocity: 3.75 m/s peak

  Alignment V3: Vb = 10 L  |  Fb = 55 Hz
    Effective port length: 195 mm → Physical port length: ~158 mm
    Port air velocity: 3.17 m/s peak

  Note: Port physical lengths span 158–173 mm across all three tunings — a near-constant
  15 mm range — arising from the Helmholtz relationship between increasing Vb and
  decreasing Fb. All velocities are well within hi-fi limits; at maximum AES power
  (60W), the cone excursion in the vented passband remains within Xmax = 2.0 mm.
  A subsonic high-pass filter at Fb − 10 Hz (45–65 Hz, depending on alignment) is
  recommended to prevent mechanical over-excursion below the tuning frequency.
CROSSOVER AND SYSTEM DESIGN NOTES
  CONE BEAMING (f_beam = 2,047 Hz — LOWEST IN FULL-RANGE FAMILY):
    The 5-inch cone with Sd = 90 cm² begins transitioning to directional beaming
    at approximately 2,047 Hz — significantly lower than the 4-inch drivers
    (2,577–2,738 Hz) and the lowest f_beam in the family. In wide-dispersion
    applications, a tweeter crossover at or below 2.0 kHz is mandatory. In column
    arrays, the crossover frequency should be governed by f_array (1.32 kHz) rather
    than f_beam, since the array coherence limit is lower. The manufacturer's note
    on "improved off-axis frequency response" reflects optimisation of the custom cone
    formulation to suppress breakup modes, extending usable off-axis response further
    than a standard paper cone of this diameter.

  INDUCTANCE ROLLOFF (f_Le = 3,183 Hz — within audio band):
    Le = 0.28 mH gives a rolloff onset at 3,183 Hz. This is the second-lowest f_Le
    in the 4-inch/5-inch group (above only the 4FRX4-385 at 1,811 Hz and below the
    4FRX4-322 at 6,189 Hz). In standalone full-range use, DSP treble correction above
    3 kHz can restore flat response; in 2-way designs, crossing to a tweeter below
    2.0 kHz (which simultaneously addresses f_beam) avoids the rolloff region entirely.
    The manufacturer's note that crossovers can be designed "without the need for large
    equalizations" is consistent with f_Le being well above the primary crossover
    region (1–2 kHz) for most 2-way configurations.

  COLUMN ARRAY DIRECTIVITY (f_array = 1.32 kHz for 130.5 mm OD):
    The 5-inch OD of 130.5 mm is the largest frame in the full-range family and gives
    the lowest coherent vertical array directivity limit: approximately 1.32 kHz. In a
    column array, the crossover to tweeter must be at or below 1.3 kHz to maintain
    vertical directivity coherence — this is a tighter constraint than for the 4-inch
    drivers (1.48–1.66 kHz). A co-located tweeter is mandatory. The large OD also
    affects driver centre-to-centre spacing in vertical arrays, which sets the onset of
    grating lobes in the vertical plane.

  POWER HANDLING AND EXCURSION:
    At 60W AES, this is the highest-power driver in the family. Vd = 18.0 cm³ at
    Xmax = 2.0 mm is among the largest in the family. The combination of high SPL
    (105.9 dB max) and moderate excursion makes this driver suited to PA and column
    applications where sustained high output is required. Below Fb in vented enclosures,
    a subsonic filter is mandatory; in free-air use, there is no such constraint.

  DUAL-GASKET MOUNTING:
    Front or rear baffle installation as per 41NFRX16-464A. This simplifies column
    cabinet tooling: front-loading and rear-loading variants can use the same driver,
    with gasket orientation reversed. The 113.5 mm baffle cutout and 130.5 mm OD
    should both be verified against column cabinet cross-section dimensions.

  8Ω IMPEDANCE:
    The 8 Ω nominal impedance (Re = 5.6 Ω) is the standard load for most professional
    amplifier channels. Two drivers in parallel = 4 Ω; four drivers in parallel = 2 Ω
    (verify amplifier minimum impedance before parallel wiring). Single-driver 8 Ω
    operation is the standard configuration for column array wiring.

  ZOBEL NETWORK:
    A Zobel network (5.6 Ω + 8.9 μF in series, across driver terminals) is recommended
    for passive crossover designs to counteract the Le-related impedance rise above
    3 kHz. The values are straightforward and the component cost is modest at 8Ω.
5-INCH DRIVER COMPARISON

  NOTES:
  • 5FRX8-465A delivers the highest max SPL (105.9 dB) and largest Sd (90 cm²) in the
    family, with the lowest f_beam (2,047 Hz) — the 5-inch cone is best used to 2 kHz.
  • It shares the highest Vd with 41NFRX16-464A (18.0 vs. 17.88 cm³) but achieves this
    with a larger cone and smaller Xmax rather than high excursion in a small cone.
  • For column arrays, the 5-inch's lower f_array (1.32 kHz) is the binding constraint
    and requires a lower tweeter crossover point than the 4-inch drivers.
  • Choose 5FRX8-465A for 8Ω, 60W AES, free-air or vented applications where maximum
    SPL, largest cone area, and dual gasket mounting are priorities.
  • Choose 41NFRX16-464A (16Ω, 40W, vented) for maximum excursion (3.15 mm) and
    genuine vented bass extension (65–80 Hz) in a smaller 4-inch footprint.

  FAMILY NOTES:
  • 5FRX8-465A achieves 105.9 dB max SPL — the new highest in the family, 0.8 dB above
    41NFRX16-464A (105.1 dB), enabled by the 60W AES rating — the highest in the family.
  • The family now spans 5 driver sizes (2", 2.5", 3", 3.5", 4", 5"), 5 impedances
    (4, 8, 16 Ω and variants), 5 enclosure types, and Qts range 0.32–1.10.
  • OD range: 48 mm (20NFRX4-345A) to 130.5 mm (5FRX8-465A); f_array range:
    3.58 kHz (2-inch) to 1.32 kHz (5-inch) — a predictable inverse relationship.
  • The three highest max-SPL drivers (105.9, 105.1, 104.1 dB) are the 5FRX8-465A,
    41NFRX16-464A, and 32NFRX8-463A — all high-motor-force designs with Vd ≥ 17.9 cm³.
  • The two free-air drivers with the lowest f-3dB in the family are the 40NFRX16-223
    (87 Hz, free-air, DSP-correctable peak) and the 5FRX8-465A (94 Hz, free-air, no peak).
SUMMARY
The 5FRX8-465A is the first 5-inch driver in the full-range family, built around a
large high-grade ferrite magnet, a steel basket with all components extensively coated
for environmental resistance, a REDCATT-developed custom paper pulp cone with an
optimised profile for break-up mode suppression and improved off-axis frequency response,
NBR rubber surround, Nomex spider, and a 25.4mm copper voice coil wound on a Kapton
former. The newly-designed basket incorporates front and rear gaskets, allowing front or
rear baffle installation without adapter rings — the same dual-gasket feature as the
41NFRX16-464A. The Sd = 90 cm² effective cone area is the largest in the full-range
family; the AES power rating of 60W is the highest; and the resulting maximum SPL of
105.9 dB at 1 m is also the highest in the family. The Qms = 11.4 indicates exceptionally
low mechanical losses in the suspension system, contributing to clean transient response
and low in-band coloration in enclosure use.

Fs = 92 Hz, Qes = 0.73, Qms = 11.4, Qts = 0.69. Vas = 3.8 L, Sd = 90.0 cm²,
Xmax = 2.0 mm (one-way), Vd = 18.0 cm³ — the highest volume displacement in the
full-range family (tied with the 41NFRX16-464A at 17.88 cm³). Qts = 0.69 is at the
boundary between sealed-preferred and free-air domains; the Butterworth sealed alignment
requires approximately 76 L (impractical), and all practical sealed alignments yield a
higher f-3dB than free-air. Free-air operation provides f-3dB ≈ 94 Hz with no resonance
peak (Qts < 0.707), making it the primary recommendation. Sensitivity is 88.16 dB at
1W/1m (Lm), consistent with the CSV Sensitivity field (89.55 dB, 2.83V/1m) within 0.16 dB
for an 8 Ω driver. Maximum SPL is 105.9 dB at 1 m (60W AES). Cone beaming onset at
2,047 Hz is the lowest in the family; a tweeter crossover at or below 2.0 kHz is mandatory
for wide-dispersion operation. Voice coil inductance Le = 0.28 mH places the inductance
rolloff onset at 3,183 Hz; a tweeter crossover at 1.5–2.0 kHz simultaneously addresses
both constraints. In column arrays, the 130.5 mm OD limits coherent vertical directivity
to approximately 1.32 kHz — the lowest f_array in the family. Zobel network: 5.6 Ω +
8.9 μF in series across driver terminals.

  Enclosure alignments:
  • Free-air / open-back (primary):
      f-3dB ≈ 94 Hz  |  No resonance peak (Qts = 0.69 < 0.707)  |  No box required
  • Sealed (secondary):
      3.45 L / Qtc = 1.00 / f-3dB = 105 Hz
      1.88 L / Qtc = 1.20 / f-3dB = 118 Hz
      1.02 L / Qtc = 1.50 / f-3dB = 140 Hz  (compact; sub-assisted column driver bays)
  • Vented (tertiary) — 50 mm port:
      5 L / Fb = 75 Hz / ~173 mm physical port / 4.32 m/s peak port velocity
      7 L / Fb = 65 Hz / ~163 mm physical port / 3.75 m/s peak port velocity
     10 L / Fb = 55 Hz / ~158 mm physical port / 3.17 m/s peak port velocity
    (Port physical lengths span 158–173 mm across all three tunings — 15 mm near-constant
     range; all velocities well below 17 m/s hi-fi limit; subsonic filter at Fb − 10 Hz
     mandatory to prevent over-excursion below tuning frequency)

The 5FRX8-465A is suited for hi-fi and studio desktop loudspeakers and bookshelf
monitors requiring the highest max SPL (105.9 dB) in the full-range family, with free-air
bass extension to 94 Hz and a clean, peak-free low-frequency response; column speaker and
multi-way installed sound systems where 60W AES power handling, dual-gasket front/rear
mounting, and a 1.32 kHz column array coherence limit (requiring co-located tweeter at or
below 1.3 kHz) define the system architecture; vented PA and touring enclosures where a
5-inch driver tuned to 55–75 Hz in a 5–10 L reflex cabinet requires maximum bass output
with port velocities well within hi-fi limits; and sheltered or semi-exposed installed
sound environments where the extensively coated steel basket construction provides enhanced
durability without requiring a fully outdoor-rated PP cone.
