Design Notes

The 21NPW is a high efficiency, (96 dB 1watt / 1 meter) 21-inch woofer with incredibly linear frequency response characteristics, extreme high power handling capability while generating low harmonic distortion artifacts. The 21NPW uses a lightweight carbon fiber loaded cone assembly along with a high excursion triple roll constant geometry surround. This combination provides remarkable strength, high efficiency and a peak to peak maximum excursion of 31mm.

Power Handling
At the core of the 21NPW is it’s voice coil technology featuring a composite Polyimide former material capable of withstanding peak temperatures in excess of 350C, well beyond the thermal requirements of modern professional audio systems. The 21NPW delivers incredible performance.

REDCATT has implemented a triple layer/silicone spider design to ensure long term Fs memory, consistency and diminish anomalies associated with spider deterioration.

Technical Summary

The 21NPWX4-018 is a 21-inch professional sub-woofer driver rated at 1800 W AES (3600 W continuous) into a nominal 4-ohm impedance, designed for touring, large-venue installation, and high-SPL bass reinforcement systems requiring maximum output in the sub-bass frequency range. The driver delivers 96.32 dB sensitivity (1W/1m), among the highest in its class for a 21-inch frame, and is built around a neodymium motor generating a Bl of 32.9 T·m — providing exceptionally tight cone control at high drive levels with reduced thermal compression over sustained operation.

In bass reflex enclosures, the driver performs best in net internal volumes of 100 to 220 liters, tuned between 30 and 40 Hz, delivering an estimated -3 dB frequency of approximately 30 to 40 Hz. Slot ports (250 mm × 80 mm) for fixed installation and dual 125 mm round ports for touring are both practical across all three alignments, with port velocities between 11.5 and 18.8 m/s. The 160-liter balanced alignment tuned to 35 Hz represents the general-purpose professional recommendation, providing strong output from 35 Hz upward with dual round ports operating at 13.4 m/s.

The driver is rated for use with amplification of approx. 1800 W AES (3600 W continuous) into 4 ohms, with a high-pass filter recommended in the 24–35 Hz range depending on alignment. DSP processing with excursion limiting is essential at sustained high-power levels; below the tuning frequency, cone excursion increases rapidly and approaches the 9 mm Xmax before thermal limits are reached. Two drivers wired in parallel present a 2-ohm load; series wiring presents 8 ohms.

The 21NPWX4-018 is intended for professional touring sub arrays, stadium and large-venue ground stacks, club and nightclub subwoofer installations, concert infrastructure subwoofer systems, and fixed-install bass reinforcement in venues where the combination of high sensitivity, extreme power handling (Polyimide former rated to 350°C), and maximum cone displacement define the required performance envelope.

Le=1.14mH | Neodymium | 5.3" Polyimide former | Triple silicone spider

DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS:
  - Bl=32.9 T·m — the highest motor force index in the REDCATT pro
lineup; exceptionally tight cone control, low Qts, and high
    sensitivity at maximum drive levels
  - 96.32 dB sensitivity (1W/1m) — excellent for a 21" sub, allows
less amplifier power for a given SPL vs lower-sensitivity designs
  - 5.3" (134.6mm) voice coil on Polyimide composite former, rated to
peak temperatures in excess of 350°C — the primary enabler of
    sustained 3600W continuous operation
  - Triple layer/silicone spider — engineered for long-term Fs memory
and consistent mechanical behavior under touring conditions; resists
creep and spider fatigue during high-power sustained operation
  - Triple roll constant-geometry fabric surround — maintains controlled
cone motion throughout the 9mm Xmax linear range; 31mm P-P design
    excursion travel
  - CF paper cone — carbon fiber reinforced for rigidity and controlled
modal behavior in the upper bass range
  - Qms=11.12 — low mechanical losses; motor and amplifier provide the
dominant system damping (Qes=0.33 governs behavior)
  - Neodymium motor — compact and lightweight for a 21" sub at 14.85 kg
total, reducing enclosure and rigging weight in touring applications

RECOMMENDED ENCLOSURE TYPE: Bass Reflex (Vented) only
Qts=0.32 places this driver firmly in the classic pro vented range.
Sealed enclosures are not recommended: achieving Butterworth (Qtc=0.707)
would require ~38L — impractically small for a 21" baffle, and would
shift the system resonance to ~77 Hz, far outside useful subwoofer
operating range. All three alignments below maximize the driver's
output, extension, and efficiency in vented loading.
VENTED ALIGNMENTS
Vd = 1662 cm² × 9.0mm = 1495.8 cm³

Both slot and dual round port options given per alignment.
Slot ports are recommended for fixed installation; dual round ports
for touring cabinets where slot construction adds weight.

  a) High SPL / Touring Compact
     Net Volume: 100 liters
     Tuning (Fb): 40 Hz
     Est. -3dB: ~40 Hz
HP Filter: 35 Hz (24dB/oct — essential; excursion rises steeply
                below tuning with Xmax=9mm)
     Slot Port: 250mm W × 80mm H × 373mm long
Dual Round Ports: 125mm dia × 457mm each
     Port Velocity (slot): 18.8 m/s ✓
     Port Velocity (dual round): 15.3 m/s ✓
Notes: Maximum output per unit volume. Compact footprint ideal for
flyware and ground-stacked touring subwoofer arrays. Strong
mid-bass punch in the 40–80 Hz region, well-matched to kick
drum and bass guitar fundamental output. High-pass protection
is critical at full power — at or near Xmax, excursion below
Fb is mechanical-limit constrained, not thermally.

  b) Balanced / General Purpose
     Net Volume: 160 liters
     Tuning (Fb): 35 Hz
     Est. -3dB: ~35 Hz
HP Filter: 28 Hz (24dB/oct recommended)
     Slot Port: 250mm W × 80mm H × 304mm long
Dual Round Ports: 125mm dia × 373mm each
     Port Velocity (slot): 16.5 m/s ✓
     Port Velocity (dual round): 13.4 m/s ✓
Notes: Standard professional sub alignment tuned near Fs. Excellent
balance between low-frequency extension, SPL output, and
practical cabinet size. Suitable for concert touring, club
installation, and outdoor events. Dual round ports at
13.4 m/s are comfortably below audible turbulence threshold.

  c) Extended Low Frequency
     Net Volume: 220 liters
     Tuning (Fb): 30 Hz
     Est. -3dB: ~30 Hz
HP Filter: 24 Hz (24dB/oct recommended)
     Slot Port: 250mm W × 80mm H × 301mm long
Dual Round Ports: 125mm dia × 369mm each
     Port Velocity (slot): 14.1 m/s ✓
Port Velocity (dual round): 11.5 m/s ✓ (very low)
Notes: Maximum deep bass extension for large venue, stadium, and
fixed installation subwoofer systems. At 30 Hz tuning with
a 21" driver at 1800W AES, acoustic output in the sub-30Hz
band is exceptional. Dual round ports at 11.5 m/s produce
effectively inaudible port noise. Suitable for cinema, live
event infrastructure, and permanent installation systems.
