Design Notes

32NFR delivers incredible . It comes together with other speaker models as the next generation of our full-range drivers. Well balanced frequency response from LF to HF, low harmonic distortion, and on top of that all packed in a lightweight and compact mechanical structure.
The driver was designed around neodymium ring magnet. Magnetic circuit delivers the highest level of performance, with minimum modulation distortion.
The cone and surround were newly designed and optimized specifically for this model. Progressive roll surround further improves the frequency response.
Our newly designed basket with typical REDCATT visual aspects sports front and rear gaskets, thus the driver can be easily mounted on both sides of baffle. Large basket openings minimize turbulences and air noise. Space bellow spider is also vented. This further improves the temperature stability of this model. The mounting surface has a flange all around, feature that greatly improves mechanical rigidity.

=== DERIVED PARAMETERS ===
Volume displacement (Vd):         Sd × Xmax = 33.18 × 0.12 cm = 3.98 cm³
Inductance rolloff onset (f_Le):  Re / (2π × Le) = 5.5 / (2π × 0.0002) ≈ 4,374 Hz
Cone radius (r_cone):             √(Sd/π) = √(33.18/π) = 3.25 cm
Cone beaming onset (f_beam):      c / (π × r_cone) = 34,400 / (π × 3.25) ≈ 3,370 Hz
Max SPL @ 30W AES:                89.37 + 10·log₁₀(30) = 104.1 dB (1m)
Max SPL @ 60W continuous:         89.37 + 10·log₁₀(60) = 107.2 dB (1m)
Zobel network:                    R_z = 5.5 Ω (series), C_z = Le/Re² = 6.6 μF (series)

NOTE ON SENSITIVITY AND MOTOR STRENGTH:
At 90.99 dB (2.83V/1m) and Bl = 5.35 T·m, the 32NFR is by far the most powerful
motor in the full-range driver family. The Qts = 0.32 and high sensitivity classify
this driver as a high-efficiency professional full-range unit — behaviorally more
similar to a pro mid-woofer motor than a conventional full-range driver. Max SPL of
104.1 dB (30W AES) is 7.5 dB above the nearest family member (31NFR at 98.3 dB),
and represents a substantial output capability from a 3-inch format.

NOTE ON f_Le = 4,374 Hz:
Le = 0.20 mH is the highest inductance in the full-range family. Voice coil inductive
reactance becomes significant above 4,374 Hz, causing a gentle HF rolloff at approx.
6 dB/octave above this frequency. At 8 kHz (~1 octave above f_Le) the rolloff is
approximately 3–6 dB. For full-range use without a tweeter, DSP treble correction
above 4 kHz is recommended to compensate. The neodymium ring magnetic circuit design
mitigates flux modulation distortion, but the fixed inductance still governs the HF
rolloff rate. Compare to the 30FF (f_Le = 22,282 Hz) or 31NFR (f_Le = 11,150 Hz)
for applications where HF extension above 8 kHz is critical.

NOTE ON NEODYMIUM RING MAGNET:
Like the 25NFRX8-279, the 32NFR uses a neodymium ring magnetic circuit for lower
flux modulation distortion compared to a U-cup slug design, particularly at higher
excursion levels. This reduces even-order harmonic distortion in the operating band.

=== ENCLOSURE RECOMMENDATION ===
Qts = 0.32 → Vented (bass-reflex) enclosures primary.

IMPORTANT — THIS DRIVER IS UNIQUE IN THE FULL-RANGE FAMILY:
All other full-range drivers (20–31NFR, 30FF) have Qts ≥ 0.52 and prefer free-air
or open-back installation. The 32NFR's Qts = 0.32 follows the same enclosure rules
as a pro mid-woofer — it requires a vented enclosure for useful bass extension.
Free-air is NOT recommended:

  Free air (Qts = 0.32): f-3dB ≈ 331 Hz — bass very limited; not recommended
  Sealed (Qtc=0.707):      f-3dB = 261 Hz   — only marginally better than free-air
  Vented (Fb=75–115 Hz): f-3dB ≈ Fb — proper bass extension to Fb

--- VENTED ALIGNMENTS (75mm round port) — PRIMARY ---
Port area: Ap = π × (3.75 cm)² = 44.18 cm²
Port velocity limit: ≤22 m/s (pro); actual velocities are extremely low (<1 m/s)
  due to the very short Xmax (1.2 mm) limiting volume displacement to 3.98 cm³.
  Port velocity is not a constraint for this driver in any practical alignment.
End correction (flanged + unflanged): ~54 mm subtracted from Leff for physical length.

Alignment 1 — Compact (column driver section / moderate-sized cabinet)
  Cabinet volume (Vb):           4 L
  Tuning frequency (Fb):         115 Hz
  Effective port length (Leff): 250 mm
  Physical tube length:          ~196 mm
  Peak port velocity: 0.65 m/s ✓ (no practical limit)

Alignment 2 — Standard (general-purpose column or 2-way system)
  Cabinet volume (Vb):           6 L
  Tuning frequency (Fb):         95 Hz
  Effective port length (Leff): 245 mm
  Physical tube length:          ~191 mm
  Peak port velocity:            0.54 m/s  ✓

Alignment 3 — Extended low-frequency (large column or standalone system)
  Cabinet volume (Vb):           10 L
  Tuning frequency (Fb):         75 Hz
  Effective port length (Leff): 235 mm
  Physical tube length:          ~181 mm
  Peak port velocity:            0.42 m/s  ✓

NEAR-CONSTANT PORT LENGTH NOTE:
Effective port lengths range only 235–250 mm across all three alignments (15 mm span).
A single 75mm × 191mm port tube serves the standard alignment and can be trimmed
±10 mm to serve compact or extended tunings. The near-constant length is a consequence
of the low-Qts driver characteristic: larger Vb and lower Fb cancel in the Helmholtz
equation, producing similar port lengths across the full alignment range.

PORT VELOCITY NOTE:
All three alignments show port velocities below 0.7 m/s — far below any practical
limit. The 1.2mm Xmax and 3.98 cm³ volume displacement are so small that port air
velocity is negligible. The driver's Xmax is the only mechanical constraint.

--- SEALED ENCLOSURES — SECONDARY (for sub-assisted installations) ---
Sealed enclosures are appropriate when the 32NFR is used in a system with a dedicated
subwoofer handling bass below ~300 Hz. The sealed alignments provide very compact
rear cavities suitable for slim column enclosures.

Alignment A — Butterworth sealed (widest bandwidth)
  Cabinet volume (Vb):    294 mL
  System Qtc:             0.707
  System fc:              261 Hz
  System f-3dB:           261 Hz
  Notes: Best sealed bass extension; practical cavity for column or portable use

Alignment B — Moderate sealed
  Cabinet volume (Vb):    188 mL
  System Qtc:             0.85
  System fc:              313 Hz
  System f-3dB:           270 Hz
  Notes: Very compact; mild peak; small DSP correction needed for flat response

Alignment C — Compact sealed (slim column / TV bar)
  Cabinet volume (Vb):    130 mL
  System Qtc:             1.00
  System fc:              369 Hz
  System f-3dB:           290 Hz
  Notes: Minimal cavity size; peaked response; DSP correction required

=== COLUMN SPEAKER / ARRAY GUIDANCE ===
The 8Ω nominal impedance allows standard amplifier connection and parallel wiring:
  2× 8Ω in parallel = 4Ω
  4× 8Ω in parallel = 2Ω

Array directivity — the 82.5mm overall driver diameter sets minimum pitch in a column:
  Maximum coherent array frequency: c / (2 × driver pitch)
                                    = 34,400 cm/s / (2 × 8.25 cm) ≈ 2,085 Hz ≈ 2.1 kHz

Above approximately 2.1 kHz, grating lobes appear in the vertical radiation pattern —
the lowest coherent array frequency in the full-range family due to the largest 3-inch
form factor. The 3,370 Hz cone beaming onset provides directivity control above this.

For column enclosures with vented alignment, a common rear chamber shared between
multiple drivers can be used, with the total volume divided per driver. For example,
a column with 4× 32NFR drivers using Alignment 2 (6L per driver) requires a total
shared cavity of 24L — achievable in a large floor-standing column enclosure.

For compact column applications with external subwoofer, Sealed Alignment A or B
(188–294 mL per driver) is more practical in slim column form factors.

=== CROSSOVER / DSP GUIDANCE ===
Recommended operating band: ~95–3,370 Hz (vented Fb to f_beam onset)
                              or ~300 Hz+ in sealed sub-assisted installations
High-pass filter: At or above Fb (75–115 Hz for vented); mandatory —
                             Xmax = 1.2mm provides only 3.98 cm³ displacement; bass
                             below Fb causes rapid excursion increase
Low-pass / upper limit:      Below 3,370 Hz for controlled directivity;
                             for use without HF driver, response extends to ~10 kHz
                             with DSP correction above 4 kHz
Inductance rolloff (f_Le):   Begins at 4,374 Hz — the earliest in the family;
                             DSP treble correction above 4 kHz recommended for full-
                             range (tweeter-less) use; approximately 3–6 dB boost
                             at 8 kHz to compensate natural inductance rolloff
Cone beaming: Onset at 3,370 Hz — earliest in the family; directivity
                             narrows meaningfully above 3.4 kHz; this aligns with
                             the f_Le rolloff onset, providing a natural transition
                             from wide-dispersion midrange to narrowing HF
Passive crossover: Zobel network (5.5Ω + 6.6 μF in series across driver
                             terminals) is especially important here given the higher
                             Le (0.20 mH) — the inductance rise above 4 kHz is more
                             significant than in other family members

  band element; not a bass driver.
25NFRX8-279: Best all-round 2.5" full-range; near-Butterworth free air at 123 Hz;
  largest Vd (5.62 cm³) for bass boost.
30FFX8-264B: Ferrite; lowest f_Le (22,282 Hz) for flattest impedance and best HF
  extension; highest 2.83V sensitivity (85.1 dB) among paper-cone 3" variants.
31NFRX8-229: Aluminum cone; lowest free-air f-3dB (97 Hz); highest SPL (98.3 dB)
  and power (30W) among free-air 3" variants; Qms=15.1 for lowest distortion.
32NFRX8-463A: Highest sensitivity (90.99 dB) and max SPL (104.1 dB) of the family
  by a wide margin; professional-grade motor (Bl=5.35); requires vented enclosure;
  f_Le=4,374 Hz limits HF — apply DSP correction above 4 kHz; best choice when
  maximum SPL per watt from a 3-inch format is the primary design objective.

=== SUMMARY ===

The 32NFRX8-463A is a 3-inch full-range driver featuring a neodymium ring magnetic circuit and a high-force motor (Bl = 5.35 T·m), producing the highest sensitivity (90.99 dB / 2.83V/1m, 89.37 dB / 1W/1m) and maximum SPL (104.1 dB at 30W AES) of the seven-variant full-range driver family by a substantial margin. The carbon fiber reinforced paper cone uses a progressive roll geometry with an optimised NBR rubber surround, driven by a ~19mm CCAW voice coil on a Kapton former. The steel basket features an all-around front flange, front and rear gaskets enabling both front- and rear-mounting, and a vented spider cavity for improved thermal stability. Qts = 0.32 reflects a low Qts, high motor strength design optimised to maintain consistent performance at high drive levels — and uniquely within the full-range family, this driver requires vented (bass-reflex) enclosures, not free-air mounting.

Qts = 0.32 is the lowest in the full-range family; in free air the f-3dB is approximately 331 Hz, making open-back installation inappropriate. Vented enclosures using a 75mm round port are the primary recommendation, delivering tuning frequencies of 75–115 Hz within practical cabinet volumes. All three vented alignments share effective port lengths within a 15mm range, and a single 191mm tube serves the standard alignment:

  • 4 L / 115 Hz — compact column driver section; port ~196 mm physical; 0.65 m/s
  • 6 L / 95 Hz — standard column or 2-way PA; port ~191 mm physical; 0.54 m/s
  • 10 L / 75 Hz — extended LF for large column or standalone system; port ~181 mm; 0.42 m/s

For sub-assisted column installations, sealed enclosures of 130–294 mL (Qtc=0.707–1.00, f-3dB 261–290 Hz) provide very compact and practical rear cavities for slim column form factors where a separate subwoofer covers the bass band. Amplification of 30–60W from an 8Ω output is appropriate. The voice coil inductance Le = 0.20 mH is the highest in the family, placing the inductance rolloff onset at 4,374 Hz — within the audio band; DSP treble correction above 4 kHz is recommended for tweeter-less full-range use. Cone beaming onset at 3,370 Hz is also the earliest in the family. In column array applications, the 82.5mm driver OD limits coherent vertical directivity to approximately 2.1 kHz. A Zobel network (5.5Ω + 6.6 μF in series across driver terminals) is recommended for passive crossover designs, and is particularly important for this driver given its higher Le. The 32NFRX8-463A is suited for high-efficiency professional column speaker systems requiring maximum SPL from a 3-inch format with proper vented bass alignment; two-way PA and installed sound systems where its high sensitivity enables high output at moderate amplifier power; multi-way arrays using the driver's midrange efficiency with bass coverage from dedicated woofers or subwoofers; and any application where 104+ dB SPL from a compact full-range driver is the principal design objective.
